ROBBY READY Robby Gordon will announce a switch from Chevrolet to Ford for 2007 during a press conference tomorrow afternoon at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Ford Racing Director Dan Davis said Friday that he's looking forward to having Gordon on board. "What Robby represents to me is someone we've worked with over the past in open-wheel (racing) who has a very technical approach," said Davis. "He understands technology, he understands what it can do for you, he understands the kind of engineering that can be put into race cars. In open wheel, you had engineers on these things and, boy, they were really technical. A lot of simulation work. He knows all these properties. He knows the tools and what can be brought from the manufacturer with a lot of science. He knows all that. He's really anxious to tap into that knowledge and apply it. He's willing to work with us to get the right engineering people involved. … I view it that were getting the best single-car-owner team out there right now. But we are not embarking on this as a single-car effort. This is embarking on what will eventually be a multi-car team with a solid engineering approach."

TOYOTA BOSS TALKS Lee White, senior vice president and general of Toyota's TRD, USA racing division, said the Japanese automaker is in Nextel Cup for the long haul, not to make an immediate splash. "From a business standpoint, this is where Toyota needs to be and we will be here for 100 years," said White during a press conference at Lowe's Motor Speedway. "We're not feeling pressure to go out and sit on the pole at Daytona and win Daytona. We're growing a new look, if you will, for NASCAR with new teams, new sponsors, new manufacturer. I'll feel like we've made a significant accomplishment if we can get four or five of the seven Camrys even in the race in Daytona, let alone thinking that we're going to be competing with these guys that have been here for 20 years and win that race." Toyota will compete in the Nextel Cup Series for the first time in 2007, with seven full-time cars and several more part-time teams. White also denied charges made by rival manufacturers that Toyota is greatly outspending other automakers in the Nextel Cup Series. "We've done extensive research because we've heard this," said White. "Frankly, we are not of the opinion that the level of expenditure Toyota is bringing to NASCAR is any higher than any of the other manufacturers and in a couple of cases, is not even close to as much as the other manufacturers."
