VODA: NASCAR’s Santa and Grinch
It’s a fitting time to discuss who in the NASCAR garage would make the best Santa Claus and the best Grinch Who Stole Christmas...

So, who would I put in the red and green suits?

I agree with Hamlin that the fans are Santa for allowing me to cover a sport I love. In terms of a driver, Mark Martin is my Santa Claus because of everything he has given to the sport and how much he loves it.

I really am at a loss for choosing a Grinch, which in my opinion denotes a negative person more than a mean, thieving and conniving individual. I’ll say Clint Bowyer because no one would ever consider him a Grinch but I suspect he would relish the role, plus he does get down on himself when he’s not running well.

In terms of persona, Bill Elliott might be a decent Grinch from the standpoint he’s old school and not as media savvy as some of the younger drivers and doesn’t enjoy the interview process. In fact, he usually doesn’t even appear to be interested in talking to reporters, much less excited about the opportunity, but it’s one of his endearing qualities.

But you know who might look good in a green Grinch suit? Scott Speed. He always wears those skinny European jeans and could fit in the green suit with those twiggy legs. However, I don’t know if a Grinch suit would come into vogue enough for Speed to be caught in one. He’s pretty fashion conscious.

But in all actuality, we really have no true Grinch’s in the NASCAR garage. Sure, everyone, Tony Stewart included, has their bad days but overall, most drivers are friendly, charitable and caring individuals … just the type of person you’d want around at Christmas.

I wish each of you a wonderful Christmas surrounded by family and friends who fit the Santa suit … and maybe even the Jolly Old Elf himself.
