STRONG OPEN: Tuesday was a great start for the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event, with a nice, diverse mix of cars that brought fair money on both sides in most cases. With good attendance and strong sales, it’s clear we’re off to a big start here. Check back with SPEED.com tomorrow for Day 2 of Barrett-Jackson. And remember, as the week goes on, the prices go up. See you then!

TRUCKIN’: I once asked Craig Jackson why a particular car sold for bigger-than-expected money and he just smiled and said, “Because two guys wanted it!” That must have been the case with this 1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS, which sold for an eye-popping $58,000 Tuesday night at Barrett-Jackson. Very mildly resto-modded, it came with a big-block Chevy engine, but no mention of matching numbers. To hit this money, two guys clearly did want it, but only one went home with it.

FROM THE HEART: The first of many charity vehicles at Barrett-Jackson, a 1951 Chevrolet Suburban Carryall, sells for $75,000, becoming the high sale of the day so far. It had a full frame-off restoration started in 1996 and completed in 2006. All proceeds to benefit Johns Hopkins Scleroderma Research Center.

OLD SCHOOL: One of the most iconic automotive designs of the 20th century was the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. Here’s something of a rare bird, a ’57 Bel Air four-door hardtop beautifully trimmed out in a classic ‘50s paint scheme, two-tone Canyon Coral and India Ivory paint. Definitely period correct. Inside is the popular black-and-silver upholstery, again period correct. This one has a small-block Chevrolet motor, the 283-cubic-inc Power Pak V-8 with a three-on-the-tree transmission.

Put on a Jerry Lee Lewis 45-rpm record, pull out your “I Like Ike” button and then head to the malt shop or the drive-in in this beauty. This car will bring miles of smiles wherever the new owner takes it. The hammer price on this Chevy was $26,000. That’s less than the price of a loaded modern midsized new sedan.

[Tuesday 7 pm ET]

BET ON BLACK: We’re televising the 42nd Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car event live on SPEED until midnight and streaming it live on SPEED.com until midnight as well. There is a huge crowd here at Westworld and all signs point to a huge event. We’ll be here through Sunday for you.

And already it’s been an exciting day.

I just drove this year’s 800-plus-horsepower custom Shelby GT500 Mustang Hagerty Fantasy Bid car on the Barrett-Jackson Autocross course. Oh. My. God. Keith Strong, the owner of Ice Nine Group and builder of this car, summed it up neatly. “If the Mayans were right about Armageddon, this is what it would sound like,” he said. Truly an amazing car that one lucky Hagerty Fantasy Bid player will win. Astounding car in every respect. I will have a full report Thursday morning.

[Tuesday 5:33 pm ET]

MIDNIGHT RAMBLER: Arie Luyendyk sold his custom 1959 Nash Rambler rat rod for $11,000. With a six-cylinder engine and a three-on-the-tree, this is about as basic as basic transportation gets. But the sweetener on the deal was Luyendyk, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, will take the new buyer on a 190-mile-per-hour ride in a two-seat IndyCar at the Brickyard in May. Sweet.

This 1982 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce hammered on the block at $20,000, a strong price for this early in the auction. It was a beauty, but usually the first few cars don’t bring this kind of fierce bidding.

Here is the description from the catalog: “This Spider is original and unrestored with fresh new paint. Beautiful gray exterior with perfect panel and gap fit. The exterior of the car is gorgeous, with perfect gray metallic paint. The body and paint looks like the day it was built with laser straight panels and perfect body fit. The car has a new factory cloth top with the factory boot cover. … The interior is all-original with a perfect crack-free dash with the awesome bullet style instrument cluster. The leather is original in camel color, which is wear-free, as well as the door panels.”

This was a very nice car, sold for a very, very good price.

[Tuesday 5:17 pm ET]

FIRST TO GO: The sale is on! The first car to cross the block in the 42nd Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector-Car Event is this 1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28.

The description said, “This car has never been wrecked with one repaint six months ago. … CARFAX reports vehicle sold at a salvage auction on 01/11/2000.” It hammered at $5,750. The prices will only go up from here.

SPEED and SPEED.com will bring you live coverage from 7 p.m.-midnight ET tonight. Check back here for frequent updates.

GOOD TO GO: The SPX Staging Lanes are beginning to fill up at the 42nd Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event. Among the first cars to sell today will be a vintage Alfa Romeo Spider, a 1963 Chevrolet Nova, a couple of tractors and a late-model Mercedes-Benz. One of the most unique cars is a 1970 Plymouth Valiant that was subject to a $25,000 restoration with solid mahogany interior trim assembled by a Rolls-Royce wood fabricator.

SOLD, SOLD, SOLD! The selling has officially begun at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector-Car Event. Today’s Automobilia Auction started at 11 a.m. ET and runs until 4 p.m. At 4 p.m., the selling of cars commences, with SPEED’s live television and online streaming coverage beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The bidding at the Automobilia Auction is already fast and furious, and we’re just getting started today.

One of the quirky cars selling today is this 1957 BMW Isetta, which has been restored to look like a taxi. This is an oddity, for sure, and an affordable one at that. They aren’t all six- and seven-figure cars here at Barrett-Jackson.
