Just when it looked as if racing at Talladega Superspeedway could be done with a relative amount of safety, the Aaron’s 312 Nationwide Series night-cap race ended with a violent crash that saw Dennis Setzer’s Dodge sail into the catchfence and Brad Keselowski, who knows a thing or two about flying into fences, scoring a surprise win.

For most of the race’s green-white-checkered-flag run to the finish, it looked like it would be an encore performance by Jamie McMurray and Kevin Harvick, who raced for the win in the closing laps of the earlier Cup race.

But this time, as the two double-dipping Cup drivers squared off, McMurray collided with Clint Bowyer, setting off a nasty,multi-car crash in Turn Four.

For Keselowski, it was his second Talladega win in a year, the first coming in the Cup race a year ago. This time, he was lucky to be even running in the Nationwide event. He crashed late in the Cup race and almost didn’t get medical approval to even run the race as his carbon monoxide levels were too high initially.

“Green-white-checkers at Talladega are crazy,” Keselowski said.

Joey Logano, who crashed in the Cup race, restarted 10th on the final Nationwide Series run and finished second ahead of Harvick, the Cup winner who was third in the nightcap.

It’s been a great day,” Harvick said. “I got up in front of the 88 [McMurray] and blocked the top line’s momentum. Wound up a couple of positions short.

“All you can ask for is a chance coming off Turn Four.”

Jason Keller finished fourth, with John Borneman III scoring a surprising fifth, with Bowyer sixth.
