Denny Hamlin’s crew came up huge Wednesday night, which might help their driver do likewise in Saturday’s Sprint All-Star Race, which will be televised live from Charlotte Motor Speedway on SPEED, starting at 7 p.m.

By winning Wednesday night’s Sprint Pit Crew Challenge, the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing crew ensured Hamlin’s Toyota will have the No. 1 pit stall in Saturday night’s All-Star race. And given that the All-Star event features a mandatory four-tire pit stop prior to the final 10-lap segment, the preferred pit stall literally could be the difference between winning and losing for Hamlin, one of the hottest drivers in the series.

Hamlin’s crew — jack man Nate Bolling; gas man Scott Wood; catch-can man John Eicher; front-tire changer Mike Hicks; front-tire carrier Brandon Pegram; rear-tire changer Jon Sherman; and rear-tire carrier Heath Cherry — were solid all night in defeating the defending champion team from Jeff Burton’s No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

“These guys just stepped up,” said Hamlin. “It was even keel all night. Solid. Solid as a rock, and that’s all you can ask for.”

Crew chief Mike Ford was understandably proud of his team for their winning effort. “This is an athletic competition and I think it proves that our guys are able to come back and compete at any level, no matter what the competition,” said Ford. “They do a great job week in and week out on pit road. ... I think it proves and it helps show that this FedEx team is strong all the way around.”

“It’s just a big honor to be recognized as the best pit crew,” said Pegram. “We’ve been close the last couple years and it’s just nice to finally come through.”
