Kurt Busch got a push from Jamie McMurray to win the Budweiser Shootout after Denny Hamlin made a wild pass coming to the checkered flag but passed below the yellow line.

Hamlin was pushing leader Ryan Newman with the pair of Busch and McMurray trailing them when Hamlin pulled out of line coming out of turn 4 and ducked below the yellow line to pass Newman. Hamlin beat Busch to the finish line, but Busch was declared the winner because Hamlin was blackflagged for passing below the yellow line. Hamlin finished 12th, the last driver on the lead lap.

After furious racing throughout the 75-lap event, there was a four-car breakaway with five laps remaining with the pairing of Ryan Newman and Denny Hamlin leading the duo of Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray.

Less than three laps had been completed in the second and final segment when Regan Smith and Carl Edwards made contact, sending Edwards into Dale Earnhardt Jr. and setting off a wild multicar crash on the backstretch.

Juan Pablo Montoya, Joey Logano, Regan Smith, Kevin Conway and Denny Hamlin were among those involved. Six were unable to return to the race – Earnhardt Jr., Smith, Conway, Edwards, Montoya and Logano.

“The racing might look kind of crazy but it was fun,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “Just too many race cars going for the same piece of real estate. We’ll be alright.”
