The Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship tightened up quite a bit on Sunday afternoon as Denny Hamlin won the race, finished four spots of point leader Jimmie Johnson and worked his way to within six points of Johnson in the standings.
Kevin Harvick, third in points, finished third in Sunday’s Tums Fast Relief 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday. He heads to next weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway – the sixth race in the 10-race Chase – 62 behind Johnson.
“Everybody said it’s a two-car race (between Johnson and Hamlin),” Harvick said. “We’re right in the middle of it.”
Mark Martin finished second in a race car that was badly damaged.
“Great run for us. We needed that,” Martin said. “What a car. Another 20 laps and we could have caught them.”
Johnson failed to lead a lap and, hence, was shut out of bonus points.
“It was a good day,” Johnson said. “I wish we were a little bit better but there’s a lot of racing left.”
Kyle Busch finished fourth. He will start Talladega fourth in points, 172 out of the lead.
