VIDEO: Bowyer Captures First Daytona Victory
The Subway Jalapeno 250 Powered By Coca-Cola culminated in a green-white-checkered finish for the fifth straight time with Clint Bowyer capturing his first win at historic Daytona International Speedway and the first win of the season for Richard Childress Racing.
“I can’t begin to tell you what this place means to me and my family,” Bowyer said. “Everything you ever work for is to come to Daytona, run well and win a race here.”
Bowyer, who put his No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevrolet on the pole in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race with a speed of 180.701 mph, led the most laps – 48 of 102 – in a race that saw 10 leaders exchange the lead 15 times.
“It was special. To come back and win at Daytona is always a special deal,” team owner Richard Childress said. “We’ve been a little bit off and when we get a little bit off everybody wants to kick you, so we just take that lick and come on back. I’m proud of everybody (at RCR) tonight.”
Kyle Busch wheeled his No. 18 NOS Energy Drink Toyota to a second-place finish – his third-straight top-two finish in the summer contest – with the assistance of teammate Joey Logano, who finished third.
“We’re proud of that second-place effort,” Busch said. “That was the best we had. Clint’s car was better than ours tonight.”
“Double-File Restarts – Shootout Style” were introduced for the first time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. The new format lines up the first- and second-place cars side-by-side as the green flag is displayed for each restart. Under the previous format, cars on the lead lap would restart in a single-file line while lapped cars would start in a lie next to them.
Jared Fogle, national spokesman for Subway Restaurants, served as Grand Marshal and the National Anthem was sung by Daytona Beach native Melisa TenBroeck, the winner of Daytona International Speedway’s fifth annual Straightaway To Stardom contest.
