SPEED’s Wendy Venturini with NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers, Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Ryan Newman and Tony Stewart on this week’s edition of “Real Deal” from Daytona International Speedway.
Announcer (Daytona 500 – 2008): "Toyota on the inside lane, Dodge on the outside lane, who will win it? It will come to the wire. Here they go into turn three, teammates working together. 12 is going to win this race. I don’t believe they can catch him. He's going have to make it wide. Ryan Newman, Roger Penske win the Daytona 500..."
Wendy Venturini: "It seems like just days ago I was interviewing Ryan Newman after that win at the Daytona 500. Here we are a year later. How much has changed? Of course Ryan Newman joining Tony Stewart at Stewart-Haas Racing. What a combination. We decided. What better way to start the 2009 season than to get into this relationship between Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman. Despite the difficulty they had at Speedweeks, these two are in good spirits and the sarcasm - as you will learn - runs deep."
Wendy Venturini: "All right, guys. Both of you have been friends for awhile now."
Tony Stewart: "What?"
Ryan Newman: "Who are you?"
Wendy Venturini: "You aren’t friends."
Tony Stewart: "We’re not friends."
Wendy Venturini: "What is the one thing that you learned about each other since becoming teammates?"
Ryan Newman: "Don’t make each other mad.
Wendy Venturini: "I think you knew that before, didn't you"
Ryan Newman: "There you go."
Tony Stewart: "I think the thing that I have noticed is how many common interests we have. Between the love of short track racing, big fans of vintage race cars."
Ryan Newman: "Vintage cars."
Tony Stewart: "Vintage cars, too. Wildlife and outdoors... fishing and hunting - I mean there is a lot of things that we not only have common interest at the race track but away from the race track."
Wendy Venturini: "Finishing each other’s sentences, too?"
Ryan Newman: "Sometimes, when needed."
Wendy Venturini: "Tony, I think the biggest question everyone is asking whether you will be able to wear all the hats, the driver, the owner or are you even going to try?"
Tony Stewart: "Yeah, you have to, but there are seven days in a week and knowing which hat to wear on which day. Monday through Thursday you wear the owner hat. When we get to the track Thursday evening and wake up Friday morning, strictly being a driver."
Ryan Newman: "He doesn’t really have a hat that says driver and a hat that says owner. Figure of speech, so you know."
