Wendy Venturini "We headed up to Yadkin County where Junior Johnson lives on his 280 acre farm. They invited me over for their country breakfast. We talked about the Hall Of Fame, which is set to open in May 2010. It was a great opportunity for me to catch up with Junior Johnson and his thoughts on the modern day NASCAR, check it out..."
Wendy Venturini "Let’s talk about the Hall Of Fame, the big Hall Of Fame that’s being built. What are your thoughts on the Hall Of Fame and where it’s headed and nominations? What is your thought process on it?"
Junior Johnson "It’s one of the best things I can think of that’s happened for the racers in NASCAR.”
Wendy Venturini "Would be pretty cool to have you in there."
Junior Johnson "Well, if I don’t get in there, that’s fine. You know, I accept what I’ve done and I’m proud of the life I’ve had in racing and where it goes it don’t worry me one way or the other. If I get in, fine, it would be the greatest thing that ever happened to me probably in racing but I accept what the people and think; what I’ve done for racing and what little part I’ve played in it."
Wendy Venturini "What do you think of today’s racing?"
Junior Johnson "Some parts I like and some parts I would better it, I think."
Wendy Venturini "How so?"
Junior Johnson "You know if I tell you, I’ll be stepping on a lot of people’s toes and I don’t want to do that."
Wendy Venturini "Your nomination into the Hall Of Fame would be removed. Teams are kind of put in a box where they can’t really work on the bodies too much. There’s not as many gray areas as there used to be. Doing it’s a good thing or what is your opinion on the cars, the teams, the crew chiefs and what the crew members can do to these cars?"
Junior Johnson "Well, I think they need to be able to work on them to make them drive better. If they want to control the body so tight you can’t do anything to it, that’s fine. It shows about every race you go to. One guy hits it and he’s lucked upon it. He’s not being able to duplicate it so he’ll run one good race and ten bad races. That’s one thing I would change. I’d let them work on the chassis."
Wendy Venturini "Let’s do some word association with some of these drivers, some of these people’s names, Jimmie Johnson, what comes to mind?"
Junior Johnson "Great race driver, you know, he proved that tying our record with three championships in a row and I wouldn’t be surprised if he don’t win four."
Wendy Venturini "What about Tony Stewart?"
Junior Johnson "Great race driver just needs good mechanical people with him all the time."
