Wendy Venturini "One of the guys we’re following is Denny Hamlin. He’s had some recent success, a great finish at Infineon. We decided to check in with Denny Hamlin, has his attitude changed? For more on that, here is a look at this week’s Real Deal.”

Wendy Venturini "Coming off Sonoma, two great finishing the last two weeks a third and fifth after two poor finishes, does this mean the monkey is off your back now?"

Denny Hamlin "Not necessarily, not until we win a race. I felt like we’ve been in position a few times this year., not as many as the year before and the year before that but we’ve been in position the win races and just haven’t finished it off."

Wendy Venturini "I know you’re hard on yourself, you said how competitive you are and I know you are frustrated with some of the results, but when I heard a quote from Mike Ford and he said, if we were that bad we wouldn’t be in the top 20. So you are Denny the downer or Denny the realist? Which is it?"

Denny Hamlin "I’m a realist but I am negative as well. I expect a lot from myself, I expect to be better than everyone on the racetrack at all times and I think a lot of that comes from a winning past. I just can't seem to get it done in the Cup series. Given the competition is harder but I just expect to do well, when things don’t go my way it gets frustrating. I mean how much more frustrating can you get than falling out before turn one of the first lap of Pocono. That stuff wears on you. As positive as you try to be, days like that bring me back to the Denny downer days."

Wendy Venturini "When you look at success in the Sprint Cup Series, how do you judge your success as a driver?"

Denny Hamlin "There’s days where I think it’s amazing to see my name above the door of a Cup car and to see the standing and the company I’m in and I think man I’m really doing good for myself considering where I came from but then there’s other days I think why am I not doing better, that’s frustrating but in the grand scheme of things life is good. We are being successful. We’re putting ourselves in a spot to be in the Chase four consecutive years and every year we have really tried. I think it is just me being hard on myself that kind of makes it that you don’t always have the best day or the best attitude."
