SPEED’s Wendy Venturini, driver Clint Bowyer and Shane Wilson, his crew chief, on the Martinsville edition of “Real Deal”.
Wendy Venturini "First off, Clint, congratulations on the start of your season. This is probably one of the best starts in your Cup career to a season so far."
Clint Bowyer "I’d say it is so far. Shane Wilson and all the guys on the Cheerios-Hamburger helper Chevrolet, it’s a credit to them. Their hard work and dedication over the off season is why we are running so well. He has been very organized throughout building a race team around me, and I think that’s the main reason we were able to start off the season at Daytona with a bang."
Wendy Venturini "Shane, this is your first year on the cup pit box with Clint. You have been up there before with Penske drivers Brendan Gaughan and Travis Kvapil in the past. How has this been, adjusting to this driver and the communication with Clint?"
Shane Wilson "We had been working with him in the Nationwide series a little bit and we aren’t a completely new team. We have the information that they have in what they did last year. We know what we had to work on, what was probably going to be okay and we kind of tackled some of that stuff."
Wendy Venturini "Last year when the announcement was made you said you were optimistic. I know Shane is right here, it is nothing against Shane but it looks like you had a little grin and bear it attitude. It didn’t look like you were really excited about the change, but it’s paying off now and you have to be happy with that."
Clint Bowyer "Yes, absolutely, but it’s hard to change you know. Things weren’t that bad before. Richard has won a lot of championships, won a lot of races and built a lot of great teams. He knew what he was doing. We had to trust that he knew what he was doing, and once again he proved us to keep our mouths shut and let him do his job as an owner."
Wendy Venturini "Shane, usually there is a growing period, but you guys come out of the box, you have the results, you have the chemistry. What happened in the learning period?"
Shane Wilson "Well, we have had some good runs, but we didn’t always start out the weekend very good. We have been able on Sunday to pull it all together. I think that’s where the team shows that we are strong, and I think that is how we got to this point with our points and we just got to keep it up."
