Ryan Reed posted a 17th-place finish in his NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series debut piloting the No. 5 RaceHard.com / RyansMission.org Wauters Motorsports Ford F150 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Reed, who in 2012 races in the ARCA Racing Series for Venturini Motorsports, made the jump into the Truck series for his first NASCAR top-tier touring series start, placing the Ford F150 in the 18th-place position for the Smith’s 350 (146 lap, 219 mile) race on the 1.5-mile Las Vegas, Nevada track.

Once the event started, Reed advanced to the 16th-place position but the race truck was so loose that the Wauters Motorsports team brought the 19-year old Bakersfield native down pit road making adjustments to tighten the chassis. Reed continued to make advances, picking off one truck at a time but the loose conditions continued as did the chassis adjustments. After the last pit stop, during caution on lap 105, the RaceHard.com / Ryansmission.org Ford was much improved with Reed scoring his fastest times of the day. Unfortunately, the laps were dwindling on the racetrack and the young driver was relegated to 17th-place position for the finish.

“I learned so much this weekend,” Ryan Reed said. “We were tremendously loose in the beginning of the race and we chased the changes on the truck. But knowing what I know now, I would have given better feedback during practice on different changes that might have helped us more during the race. The opportunity to work with a veteran crew chief like Richie Wauters was such a benefit and we are hoping to put something together so that I can be back in the No. 5 with the Wauters Motorsports team in Phoenix. I have to thank RaceHard.com and JH Sims Trucking for coming onboard to make this happen. These guys worked hard all weekend and it was really a lot of fun.”

Ryan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in February 2011 and initially told by doctors his “racing career” was over. Armed with the passion and determination to fulfill his dreams, Reed shifted his focus and poured all his energy into managing his health and educating himself on the disease. He uses his racing platform and personal story to inspire others living with T1D to continue living life to its fullest through Ryan’s Mission. (RyansMission.org)

Reed’s off-track goodwill has made him a National Celebrity Advocate of JDRF, the world’s largest charitable funder of T1D research. Today, Reed is only one of three professional race car drivers in the world to compete at the highest levels of racing with T1D.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series heads next to Talladega Superspeedway for the running of the Fred’s 250 Powered by Coca-Cola Saturday, October 6, 2012.
