Some advice for young drivers in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series: "Don't give up... just look at us" - Timothy Peters (David Vaughn Photo) ยป More Photos

ONE-AND-A-HALF MAN TRUCK SERIES TEAM GIVES BETTER-FUNDED A RUN FOR THEIR MONEY

TIMOTHY PETERS SOLD LATE FATHER’S PRIZED CORVETTE TO FUND MARTINSVILLE TOP-10 EFFORT

Peters: “When he died, a part of me wanted to stop racing, but he and my mom didn’t go into debt for me to stop.”

Most NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams have at least a dozen crew members at the shop preparing their race trucks, but Saturday’s 10th-place finisher at Martinsville Speedway has only two … make that one-and-a-half.

Timothy Peters, driver and co-owner of the No. 17 Premier Racing Dodge, counts himself as the “half” man charged with helping his crew chief and sole employee get him to the race track. Maybe less is more, though, as the part-time team brought home a top-10 finish and qualifying effort not too far from their hometown headquarters of Danville, Va., where they build their trucks in the home garage of one of Peters’ buddies and co-owners.

“We have a man-and-a-half crew because from the time I get to work to until lunchtime, I’m usually on the phone,” Peters said. “So, I’m working my poor ol’ crew chief to death. He’s my number one and only employee. I think it makes a statement that we can run the way we’ve run
out of the back of our buddy’s garage.”

In addition to time spent on the phone courting potential sponsors, Peters handles all the team’s paperwork and relationships with his three co-owners Phillip Hudgins, Scot Jones and Steve Stallings, whose garage the team has transformed into a race shop.

“Timothy called me about this and said come over to the shop,” said Chad Kendrick, Peters’ crew chief. “Then I showed up and I’m like ‘you’ve got to be kidding me. There are houses within 100 yards each way.’ If we don’t get a chance to chassis dyno, we have to crank an engine here. It’s like the fair is in town.”
