Matt Crafton claimed the top starting spot for Friday night’s WinStar World Casino 350k at Texas Motor Speedway.

During a rare Thursday evening qualifying session at TMS, Crafton had a best lap of 180.216 miles per hour in his No. 88 Menards Chevrolet. That was enough to knock off the No. 2 Kevin Harvick Inc./Realtree Outfitters Chevy driven by Elliott Sadler, who ran 179.904 mph to take the second spot.

The pole was the fourth of Crafton’s career, his second at the fast, 1.5-mile TMS oval and his first this season. He comes into tomorrow night’s race fourth in points, his best finishes of the season being a trio of third-place runs at Iowa, Indianapolis and Pocono.

“It drove really, really good right off the truck,” said Crafton, who has two second-place finishes at TMS on his career. “ ... It was on a rail.”

Crafton said he missed some of the first practice of two on Thursday because of repairs from a weight that fell off. Other than that, he said his Chevrolet was nearly perfect on the day.

“I think we’ve got the truck to beat for sure,” said Crafton.

As for Sadler, he’s expected to be announced on Friday as the full-time driver of a KHI NASCAR Nationwide Series entry. Asked about the reports, Sadler smiled and said, “I’ve heard those same rumors.”
Row 2 will be the No. 18 Kyle Busch Motorsports/Interstate Batteries Toyota driven by team owner Kyle Busch, 179.677 mph, and Sadler’s Kevin Harvick Inc. teammate, Ron Hornaday Jr., who ran 179.635 mph in his No. 33 Georgia Boot Chevy.

“Everything was good,” said Busch. “We’ve had a good day so far.”

Points leader Todd Bodine will be on the inside of Row 3, his Valvoline-sponsored No. 30 Germain Racing Toyota running 179.623 mph. He’ll be flanked by Austin Dillon, who ran 179.348 mph in grandfather Richard Childress’s No. 3 Bass Pro Chevrolet.

Completing the top 10 were Johnny Sauter, Miguel Paludo, Johanna Long and Bobby Hamilton Jr.

Bodine comes into this weekend with a 216-point lead over second-place Aric Almirola as he seeks to win his second Truck Series championship to go with the one he captured in 2006.
