In NASCAR, the race does not always end with the fastest vehicle on the track in victory lane.

Kyle Busch got a visceral reminder of that Saturday at Michigan International Speedway, when a critical late-race miscue snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at the Michigan 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race.

Busch’s Billy Ballew-owned No. 51 Miccosukee Resorts Toyota Tundra was by far the dominant truck at MIS on Saturday, but in the end he had to settle for second place behind race-winner Colin Braun and the No. 6 Con-way Freight Ford F-150 out of the Roush Fenway Racing stables.

For the first three-quarters of the event, Busch put a hurting on the field at MIS, leading 62 of the first 76 laps of the 100-lap distance. But on Lap 77, Busch attempted to dive under the lapped truck of Norm Benning, only to have Benning squeeze him ever so slightly down to the apron. That allowed Braun to make in three-wide on the high side, blowing by Busch to take a lead he would never relinquish.

Busch tried most every trick in the book, including getting on the radio with crew chief Doug George and saying, “Tell NASCAR there’s debris on the track!” in an attempt to get a caution flag. But it was not to be, and at a high-speed track like MIS, the leader definitely has a huge aerodynamic edge over the trucks behind him.

Braun held on over the final 24 laps, crossing the finish line by 1.790 seconds over Busch, an eternity by NCWTS standards. It was the 50th Truck Series victory for team co-owner Jack Roush and Braun’s first victory in 35 series starts.

Finishing third was Busch’s teammate, Brian Ickler in the No. 15 Samsung Instinct Toyota. Completing the top five were points leader Matt Crafton in the No. 88 Ideal Door/Menards Chevrolet Silverado and Mike Skinner’s No. 5 Brooklyn Products/Exide Toyota. Crafton now leads the points by 39 over Ron Hornaday Jr., who finished seventh at MIS, and 44 over Skinner.
