Dillon, the grandson of team owner Richard Childress, absolutely destroyed the field Sunday at Iowa Speedway to win the Lucas Oil 200 presented by SPEED on Mediacom.

On Saturday night, Dillon put the black No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet Silverado on the pole at the 0.875-mile speedway, and on Sunday, he ran away from the field in dominating fashion.

The youngster led for nearly all the race, holding on through a couple of late-race restarts to win over the ThorSport Racing Chevys of Johnny Sauter and Matt Crafton. James Buescher was fourth, with Stacy Compton completing the top five.

At the start of the race, Dillon broke away from Aric Almirola’s No. 51 Billy Ballew Motorsports Toyota Tundra, setting the tone for an impressive afternoon.

Dillon, who has won three consecutive poles, clearly was the class of the field, and by Lap 40, he already had put 15 trucks down at least one lap.

Then, Steven Wallace blew a right-front tire in the second BBM Toyota to go into the Turn 1 wall and bring out the first caution of the race.

Under caution, the leaders all pitted, Dillon holding the point over Brian Ickler, Almirola and Todd Bodine.

Like Wallace before him, Almirola lost a right-front tire on his BBM Toyota on Lap 75 to bring out the afternoon’s second caution flag.

Dillon still led on the Lap 81 restart, but behind him there was a fierce, four-way scrap for second place behind him.

At the midway mark, the black No. 3 Chevy had led every lap, followed by Bodine, Crafton, Sauter and Mike Skinner.

Five laps later, an engine failure in Timothy Peters’ Toyota sent the yellow flag flying for the third time on the day and the leaders down pit road. Under caution, Skinner and Donny Lia took just two tires and the top two spots off pit road, the first time all race long that Dillon surrendered the lead.

The track went green on Lap 113, but one lap later, Greg Pursley spun on the frontstretch, as Ickler, Lia and Bodine had contact just before the start-finish line, triggering a mash-up that also snared defending series champion Ron Hornaday Jr.

Under the ensuing caution, Bodine rammed Ickler and was ordered to pit road by NASCAR to serve a pass-through penalty.

The green came out at Lap 121, and Dillon quickly grabbed the lead again. By Lap 140, he stretched that lead to 3.2 seconds over Sauter, with Crafton third.

Three laps later, another yellow came out, as Jason White lost a right-front tire.

On the Lap 150 restart, Sauter went smartly to the lead, but only for three laps before Dillon got back out front.

With 28 laps to go, caution No. 6 came out for debris.

Dillon lined up on the outside for the Lap 179 restart, taking the lead easily.

But with seven laps to go, White lost another right-front tire, setting up a three-lap charge to finish.

Again, Dillon lined up on the outside, taking the lead easily and holding on for his first series victory.
