While it’s customary for NASCAR racers to thank their sponsors, crew and the boys back at the shop after winning a race, Scott Speed surely is the first NASCAR winner to include his pedicurist in the post-race thank-you list.

Asked to describe his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory, which took place Friday night in the AAA Insurance 200 at Dover International Speedway, Speed began with a dissertation on his feet. “Where to start? Okay, we’re going to start with a nice, lovely manicure,” said Speed, who drives the No. 22 Red Bull Racing Toyota Tundra for Bill Davis Racing. “Actually it was a pedicure that I got on my feet. Got my little toenails done before I came here on the plane. A little bit of blue on the tip, just the tip, just a little bit, so I think that’s going to become kind of a tradition.”

Then again, if you know Speed, it’s really not too surprising that he’s be talking pedicures in victory lane. To say he’s a free spirit is an understatement of several magnitudes. For his pre-season media publicity photo sessions, the 25-year-old California native and ex-Formula 1 racer dyed his hair platinum blonde, which left him looking like a 1985-era Sting from the band The Police.

And that’s somehow appropriate, since Speed definitely hears his own music and has throughout his career. He started racing Go-Karts at age 10, and in 2001 became champion in the US Formula Russell open-wheel road-racing series. From there, it was on to the U.S. Barber Formula Dodge and US Star Mazda Series. After winning the Red Bull Driver Search program, Speed moved on to several global road-racing series: British Formula Three, A1 Grand Prix and, in 2006, Formula 1.

Speed lasted less than two full seasons in the hyper-political world of Formula 1, culminating in a much-publicized altercation with Team Principal Franz Tost that allegedly turned physical when Tost shoved the driver.
