In NASCAR these days, old guys rule.

Mark Martin, a 50-year-old veteran from Batesville, Ark., is leading the Sprint Cup points standings and has more wins than any other driver in the series.

And in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, 51-year-old Ron Hornaday Jr. is heading towards a record-setting fourth series championship, with six victories and 12 top-five finishes in the first 19 races of the season.

Hornaday, who drives the No. 33 Chevrolet Silverado out of the Kevin Harvick Inc. stables, now has a 217-point lead over Matt Crafton in the NCWTS points standings.

And based on that performance, on Wednesday Hornaday was named third quarter Driver of the Year, becoming the first Truck Series driver to be awarded such honors. Twenty journalists from across the country voted on the award, with a total of 18 different drivers earning votes. Hornaday tallied 99 points, easily besting the 82 points scored by IndyCar driver Ryan Briscoe. Points are awarded on a 9-6-4-3-2-1 basis.

Hornaday, who had a record five consecutive victories earlier this year, was pleased to be recognized for the honors.

“This is a very big honor,” said Hornaday, who previously won Truck Series championships in 1996, ’98 and 2007. “It's pretty cool to be the one chosen out of so many candidates. There are a lot of great race car drivers throughout all the series that are eligible for this award. This has been an amazing year in the Truck Series for myself and the No. 33 team. I have to thank Kevin and DeLana (Harvick) for always giving me the best equipment and an opportunity to win week in and week out.”

“For Ron Hornaday, a full-time Truck Series competitor, to win third quarter Driver of the Year says a lot for what he and his team have accomplished this season,” said KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick. “Winning five consecutive races was truly an amazing achievement, as well as being in contention for his fourth series championship, when most guys arguably are at an age where they are considering retirement. He just seems to get better with age, like a fine wine. I think all of these factors combined really put his incredible season into perspective.”
