Man, a lot has happened in NASCAR the past week.

Did Kurt Busch back into his win Sunday at Loudon?

There’s been a lot of talk about Kurt winning the race by staying out and then being awarded the win by virtue of rain. In fact, the top finishers were really nowhere near the front of the field throughout the day. Kurt Busch and Michael Waltrip didn’t have strong enough cars to win if you take fuel mileage and Mother Nature out of the equation. But their teams gave up some track position earlier and topped off the fuel tank, and they were hoping to possibly slink out with a solid top-five finish if the last 80 laps were to go green.

Do I like it? No. Should we accept it? Yes.

I’ve lost many races on gas mileage. I’ve also lost races when we had the best car but made the wrong call on pit road. I don’t like when the fastest car loses but that is what makes the sport so great.

Sunday’s finish at Loudon puts more emphasis on the importance of teamwork.
This sport is coming back to the teams lately. I’m proud of Kurt and Michael’s teams’ decisions
to do whatever necessary to get the best finish.

Kurt Busch’s little brother Kyle took another gamble but of a different sort - one that cost him big points.

The on-track incident started with Clint Bowyer going three-wide near Sam Hornish Jr. I think Kyle was trying to avoid getting crashed in that mess, saw an opening and made a gutsy move to squeeze Montoya. Montoya probably was doing the same thing but he took it to the next level and retaliated.

What Montoya did was definitely wrong. It doesn’t matter who’s leading the points. You just don’t retaliate like that. What I respect was that Montoya admitted on live TV he intentionally hit Kyle. He didn’t really have a choice but kudos to him for not blaming it on the car getting loose or something breaking. You’ve got to admire a guy who knows he made a mistake and owns up to it.

Kyle is very aggressive, which I like, but he has a lot to learn about respect on the race track. “Move out of my way because I’m the fastest car” is not the answer and no one is just going to give him the race track.
