We’re 18 races into the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season and the more we run this new car, the better the races have. Now, before everyone starts yelling at me, yes, I’ve heard the fans’ criticism of the media, especially television broadcasters, for proclaiming good racing when some thought it stunk. But Saturday night’s race at Daytona was the best I’ve seen in years. I don’t think I’ve witnessed that much hard racing in my whole life -- not just racing for the lead but all the way back to 30th position. The jockeying for position started when they dropped the green flag and didn’t stop until we saw the checkered.
I also noticed when guys went three-wide with the new car, the middle groove seemed to slow down, which stops the “big one” from happening as easily. We didn’t have a big wreck at Daytona with 15 or 18 cars like we used to see.
I thought at one point they weren’t even going to wreck but guys were trying to position themselves to gain a few spots with the green-white-checkered finish. They started pushing and shoving and if one guy lifted and another didn’t, a chain reaction resulted. That accordion effect never fails at Daytona and Talladega.
Then there was the uproar over NASCAR not throwing the caution flag at the end of the race when Jeff Gordon was sitting there. That deal was bull. NASCAR gets criticized no matter
I’m tired of people constantly berating NASCAR for matters that are irrelevant to the race. The sanctioning body just can’t win. I don’t envy them and I would never want to be the guy in the tower calling the race. You never make the right call.
Another good call on NASCAR’s part is the possibility of opening up testing to the teams again so they can test at will whenever and wherever they want. I think NASCAR reached this point because they’re tired of teams complaining nonstop. There have been so many crew chiefs whining and griping about this new car and I think NASCAR wants to see if these teams really will test every week like they claim. I think this possibility really shocked the crew chiefs and now they’ve got to figure out another excuse for not running well or having issues with the car. It seems like our sport has become more excuse-ridden than I’ve ever seen it. These guys bust their butts but if they’re able to make an excuse, they’ll do it so fast it’ll make your head spin.
