SPEED ON-AIR PERSONALITIES REACT TO NASCAR’S SUSPENSION OF KNAUS, POINTS PENALTIES FOR NO. 48 HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS TEAM
Despain: “… As much as anything, this is a message to Knaus about who calls the shots.”
NASCAR on Wednesday handed down points penalties, suspensions and fines to the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team resulting from rules infractions found during opening-day inspection for the Daytona 500. The sanctioning body today suspended crew chief Chad Knaus and car chief Ron Malec for six races, in addition to levying 25 driver and owner points on the No. 48 team and a $100,000 fine on Knaus. Hendrick Motorsports has announced it will appeal the penalties.
SPEED on-air personalities Dave Despain, Kyle Petty and Jimmy Spencer react to the penalties below:
“My guess is this decision has more to do with Chad Knaus telling a surprised Jimmie (Johnson) in a conversation he thought was private at Talladega last year that if Jimmie won the race, ‘You have to crack the back of the car.’ I suspect NASCAR didn’t like that very much, and as much as anything, this is a message to Knaus about who calls the shots.” --Dave Despain, host of Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain
“I don’t think Knaus or the team should have been punished all because the infraction was found in the initial inspection. The process is to bring your car to the track, present it for initial inspection and if it doesn’t pass, teams should have the ability to go back, fix the problem, return and present the car again. This car never had been on the track, turned a lap or competed against anyone. So, why take points away and suspend these guys for doing their jobs and trying to find that competitive advantage? This punishment is way too harsh. Nothing should have been done to them. I have never agreed with suspension or penalties for problems found in initial inspection.
“If they had run the race and then the infractions had been found, then all of these penalties would have fit the crime because Knaus’ team then would have cheated 42 other cars on the track.
“Knaus’ history with pushing the envelope had a lot to do with this decision. A good example was Danica Patrick cursing on the radio when she got wrecked in the Nationwide race. What if that had been Kurt Busch? His radio would have played all over the media until we could recite it in our sleep. We would have heard all about how ‘Kurt is back to his old ways.’ But Danica’s outburst wasn’t made into a big deal. It’s a double-standard and Knaus is being judged unfairly in this incident.
“If Hendrick loses its appeal and Knaus has to sit out six races, I don’t think that team will skip a beat, though. At other organizations, it could be a catastrophic loss, but with this team, it won’t be a big problem at all. What is a big problem, though, is the fact that Jimmie Johnson finished 42nd in the race, and if the 25-point penalty is upheld, then you basically take him out of the first race-and-a-half of the season. If he were to come back and win the championship, it will be off of what amounts to a 34-race schedule.” --Kyle Petty, SPEED analyst on NASCAR RaceDay
“NASCAR mandated this car to standardize templates and they’ve done a fantastic job toward this goal. Anytime a team has tried to step outside the box, they’ve been reprimanded. The No. 48 team tried to get an edge at Daytona and NASCAR didn’t think their car looked like the rest of the competitors’ cars. If NASCAR had let this go, half the teams would have started massaging within the templates and we’d eventually be back to cars looking contorted and twisted out of shape. Knaus stepped over the line and outside the templates, so I think the intent of what he tried to do fit the punishment. NASCAR has said they won’t allow this and they’re proving that.
“Knaus’ previous history with the gray area had nothing to do with these penalties. In my opinion, NASCAR doesn’t judge anything based on what you’ve done in the past. They’ve been good about letting things in the past lie unless a team or driver was on probation at the time of the next offense. If this had been any of the other 42 teams, I think we’d be seeing the same fine and suspension.” --Jimmy Spencer, SPEED analyst on NASCAR Race Hub
