John Roberts: "Ask ten different people in the garage area and you will probably get ten different opinions about testing, to test or not to test, that is the question. If you have enough money and enough time, some of these teams would test 50 times a year, and they would test more than they race, but if they put the kibosh on it, maybe only the rich teams would test 100 times. What do you do? Well, there is no way to cut testing out, they are going to be testing in Lakeland or Kentucky or all sorts of tracks. They are going to test on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, you know that. You can’t stop the testing."

Kyle Petty: "Here’s the final word on testing. We don’t test; we just go to race tracks and set up. When they have Daytona testing, you have three days; you go there and set up for the 500. You don't go there and test anything; we just go there and set up. When we have charlotte, those guys go there and work out their spring combinations, and work out their shock combinations and set up. Testing is when you try something way off the wall. Here is my suggestion, follow me on this, this is really bizarre. If you really want a test, make them stay over on Mondays and test. Okay, the racetrack, if you really want to call it a test. The tires are already there, Goodyear is already there, these hotel guys are screwing you out the yin-yang so you are already paying for Sunday night hotel rooms. You have already got your planes there, let your guy’s just stay over and test on Mondays and Tuesdays are always open so we would stay here on Monday and Tuesday and have a true test for the upcoming race."

John Roberts: "Would that eliminate these crazy workaholics from leaving Monday and stopping by Lakeland on the way home?"

Kyle Petty: "No, you are never going to eliminate that but what it does do, it creates a test environment and you are going to say, well, I just ran yesterday, why do I want to test on Monday or Tuesday. Well, you didn’t really want to test if you didn’t want to stay over on Monday and Tuesday."

Mike Mulhern (Winston-Salem Journal): "But testing really isn't about testing, testing is about marketing, promotion and selling tickets. That is exactly the reason we go out to California and Vegas in January."
