The 1.5 mile tri-oval speedway in Joliet, Illinois was lapped in 30.99 seconds by Cole Whitt to post the fast time at 174.233 mph, in the first of two afternoon practice sessions.
The top five included Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (173.277 mph), Kenny Wallace, Joey Logano and Kurt Busch.
Stenhouse slapped the wall during the session but his car received only cosmetic damage.
Danica Patrick was 13th fastest with a lap of 31.50 seconds.
Series points leader Elliott Sadler was 14th fastest.
Sprint Cup Series regular Brad Keselowski's No..22 Dodge engine apparently mis-fired during the session. He was not injured in the incident and was able to return to the speedway to complete the final few laps.
The final practice session starts at 5:40 pm ET with qualifying set for 12:05 pm (ET) on Saturday.
The Chicagoland Speedway will host the NASCAR Nationwide Series Dollar General 300 Powered by Coca-Cola Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm ET.
