IndyCar star Danica Patrick sounded like a veteran NASCAR driver Thursday in talking about payback.

Patrick, a full-time IndyCar driver trying her hand at stock cars, has said throughout her NASCAR Nationwide Series experience that she will be respectful toward other drivers but understands that there are bumpers on stock cars and that drivers are supposed to use them.

After getting taken out by Braun Racing’s James Buescher at Auto Club Speedway last week, Patrick said that she might not retaliate against Buescher but that she likely won’t give him many breaks.

Patrick has not talked to Buescher, who said last week that his wreck with Patrick was not intentional.

“It’s pretty sure to say that at this point in time I’m not going to make it my mission to go out there and take him out because I don’t want anything to take away from my race,” Patrick said Thursday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. “But if he any way starts to act up out there, yeah I’m going to do something about it.

“I hope he thinks about what he did last weekend and if he plays well with others, then we’ll be able to carry on. But if he doesn’t, then there is going to be a need for something to happen because you can’t get pushed around out there.”

Patrick, 28, raced at Charlotte more than a decade ago, competing in go-karts. She recalls running over Sam Hornish Jr. after Hornish took her out.

Patrick is still looking for her first top-20 finish in the Nationwide Series as she heads into her ninth career start Friday in the Dollar General 300. She is running 13 races this year and next year in the series for JR Motorsports.

“I like being able to make my own destiny a little bit with people out there,” Patrick said. “There is a lot of drivers in IndyCar that push you around and do things that you can’t believe. You’re like, ‘Are you trying to flip the car? If I didn’t lift, that’s what would happen.’

“I don’t want to put myself in that position in those cars a lot of times. So I might come across as a little bit more of a pushover over there, but in this series, you’ve got fenders all the way around and if someone makes you mad enough, for sure you can just take them out.

“You make your own way. You don’t have to be taken advantage of because someone is just more crazy than you.”

Patrick said that she has learned from her IndyCar experience how to deal with feuds on the track.

“I’m starting to find the right way to handle situations,” Patrick said. “In the past, I just used to yell about it. I’d stomp down pit lane and go to yell at somebody. What matters is what happens out on track. I found the best thing to do was give people a taste of their own medicine out there.

“I found that you also gain respect, hopefully, in those situations, too, because you just respect them for standing up for themselves.”

Patrick was 26th in the first Nationwide practice session Thursday.
