The Sept. 11, 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway will be called the Virginia 529 College Savings 250, track officials announced Monday. Also, the Virginia College Savings Plan has been named the Official College Savings Plan of the track.

“The Virginia College Savings Plan is honored to be named the Official College Savings Plan for Richmond International Raceway and thrilled to launch the Virginia 529 College Savings 250,” said Mary Morris, CEO of the Virginia College Savings Plan. “With such a broad fan base, Richmond International Raceway can help us reach thousands of people with the message that it’s never too early — or late — to start saving for higher education, for yourself or anyone you know.”

“We are excited to have the Virginia College Savings Plan on board with Richmond International Raceway as an Official Partner and a race entitlement partner for our September NASCAR doubleheader weekend,” said track president Doug Fritz. “The Virginia College Savings Plan is a great organization assisting Virginians who are seeking higher education across the Commonwealth.”

The Virginia College Savings Plan (VCSP) provides four 529 college savings programs under its umbrella and each aims to appeal to a broad group of people interested in saving for college by providing options which suit their pocketbooks, their risk tolerance and their college planning time horizon. The VCSP offers the Virginia Prepaid Education Program (VPEP), the Virginia Education Savings Trust (VEST), CollegeAmerica, and CollegeWealth. These programs are marked by their flexibility,
affordability, diversity of investment options, strength of underlying managers and performance, and superior customer service.

Its efforts were recognized most recently in April by the investment research firm Morningstar Inc., which ranked Virginia’s two mutual fund savings programs — CollegeAmerica and VEST — among the best five college savings programs in the country. The VCSP has been in existence for 13 years and is now the largest 529 plan in the country, with almost 2 million accounts and more than $23 billion in assets under management, as of May 31.
