Ricky Stenhouse Jr. passed Kevin Harvick on the last lap to win the NRA American Warrior 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway Saturday night.

Harvick dominated the night, as he led 157 of 195 laps in his No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, but Stenhouse made a textbook final-lap pass with his No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing Ford Mustang, pulling Brad Keselowski’s No. 22 Penske Racing Dodge Charger to second with him. Harvick was third, followed by teammate Elliott Sadler and the Turner Motorsports Chevrolet of Justin Allgaier.

Afterwards, Harvick was furious because NASCAR threw a caution flag with 12 laps to go, after Keselowski threw a water bottle out on the track under green. NASCAR later said the water bottle wasn’t the reason for the caution, but that was cold comfort to Harvick.

The caution allowed Keselowski to come in and get four fresh tires, which put him back in contention after being 2 laps down earlier in the race.

“I hope you sleep well tonight,” Harvick told Keselowski after the race.

Stenhouse won for the fourth time this season and sixth in his career in 97 Nationwide Series starts.

He said it was a push from Keselowski on the final restart that gave him the momentum to get past Harvick. Next year, of course, Keselowski and Penske will race Fords, as Stenhouse does now.

“The 22 (Keselowski) is gonna be a great Ford teammate next year,” Stenhouse said. “He pushed us down that front straightaway. He had the new tires on and definitely helped us get to the win. “

With 24 of 33 races in the books on the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series season, Sadler leads Stenhouse by 12 points, Sam Hornish Jr. by 32 and Austin Dillon by 37.

“It’s not gonna be easy,” Stenhouse said of his run for a second consecutive NNS title. “That 2 car (Sadler) is obviously strong and runs up front with us every week. It’s gonna be a good battle. It was good to get this win.”
