New Hampshire Motor Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager Jerry Gappens says he wants Danica Patrick to race in his track’s June 26 NASCAR Nationwide Series race, so he’s offering 20 pounds of live lobsters to Patrick and her JR Motorsports team.

"I wanted Danica [and JRM co-owners] Kelley Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to know how much the race fans in the Northeast are looking forward to seeing her compete," Gappens in a news release. "I brought along a little enticement to show everyone what a wonderful overall experience it is to race at 'The Magic Mile,” and I think it may have worked. [Crew chief] Tony Eury Jr. is excited to feed his team fresh New England lobster."

Well, not so fast, Patrick said.

Her IndyCar obligations, come first, and then again, she’s not a big fan of seeing dead animals.

“I had to put my dog down in March that I had had for 14 years,” Patrick said. “It was so awful, and ever since then I have had such sadness for dead animals. I hit a bird one day, and it went flying, and I had to pray for him at church because that’s where I was headed.

“I saw a dead bunny in the road one day in my neighborhood, and I cried on the way home. I don’t know what my problem is. I am like ultra-wus sensitive to animals dying – and a lobster is an animal to me. I can’t imagine getting steamed to death, so I can’t help put think about that when I see that poor lobster.”
