Sprint Cup invader Kevin Harvick edged Denny Hamlin Friday to win the pole position for Friday night’s Virginia 529 College Savings 250 Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway.

Harvick ran a fast lap of 124.625 miles per hour, slipping past Hamlin by .003 of a second. Hamlin’s speed was 124.608.

Completing the top five were Austin Dillon, Cole Whitt and Kasey Kahne.

In the second 10 were defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Elliott Sadler, Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski and Kurt Busch.

Action sports star Travis Pastrana will start 25th in Friday night’s race, marking his Nationwide debut.

Danica Patrick qualified 16th.
