Prodigal son James Buescher, a native of Plano, Texas, stunned the local crowd at Texas Motor Speedway Friday night as he claimed the pole for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

Late in the session, Buescher ran 189.281 miles per hour in his No. 30 Wolfpack Energy Services Chevrolet, which knocked team owner/driver Kevin Harvick and his No. 33 Jimmy John’s Chevrolet off the pole and onto the outside of Row 1.

Harvick, who earlier in the day announced that Elliott Sadler will drive full-time for Kevin Harvick Inc. in the Nationwide Series next season, ran a 189.069 mph, close but not enough to claim the top spot.

Starting on Row 2 will be the No. 60 Copart.com Ford driven by Carl Edwards, which qualified at 188.745 mph. Kyle Busch, winner of five consecutive Texas NNS races, had a lap of at 188.706 mph, good enough for fourth place.

Row 3 will be Clint Bowyer and Martin Truex Jr., with Ricky Stenhouse Jr., David Gilliland, Steve Wallace and Joey Logano completing the top 10.

Brad Keselowski can clinch his first NNS title — and the first NASCAR championship of any kind for car owner Roger Penske — on Saturday. To lock up the title, Keselowski needs to finish 21st or better, 22nd and lead at least one lap, or finish 24th and lead the most laps.

Failing to qualify were Brian Keselowski, Danny O’Quinn Jr., Jeff Green, Morgan Shepherd, Mike Harmon, Carl Long, Mark Green and Chase Miller.
