Roush Fenway Racing will replace struggling rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr. with another rookie, Brian Ickler, in the No. 16 Nationwide Series car this weekend at Kentucky Speedway.

Stenhouse was 24th in the series standings before failing to qualify for last week’s event at Nashville, where he spun on his qualifying lap and damaged his car.

Ickler will get his third start for Roush Fenway with his previous two having come in the No. 16 car after Colin Braun had struggled. Ickler and Braun will split time in that car the rest of the year.

Stenhouse is expected to be back in the No. 6 car next week at Road America in Wisconsin.

The 21-year-old Braun, who has two years of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series experience, and the 22-year-old Stenhouse, who has not run a full NASCAR season, were supposed to run the entire Nationwide schedule

“They have great potential and we’re really excited about their future,” Roush said about Braun and Stenhouse. “You never know with a young person what they’re going to need to experience before they’ve got the maturity to be able to go in and do what they might.

“Colin and Ricky have both had more wrecks this year and more problems this year that were self-induced, that were associated with their lack of experience. We’ve had them in the cars, out of the cars, we’ve tried different crew chiefs as we’ve tried to figure out what we can do to accelerate their maturing process and I think we’re on track with both.”

Roush said there have been “a lot of skull sessions and a lot of rubbing our knuckles on the table tops” but he is optimistic about their progress.

“We’re going to see a turn of different result in the second half of the year for both of those guys than we’ve seen the first [half] of the year,” Roush said. “Stay tuned. It’s going to get better.”
