Dale Earnhardt Jr., his struggles well-documented, bounced back in a haze of emotion Friday night, winning the Subway Jalapeno 250 Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway in a swift Chevrolet carrying the number and sponsorship colors once campaigned by his late father.

Earnhardt Jr. brought the blue and yellow No. 3, with Earnhardt Sr.’s Wrangler sponsor design, home in front of Joey Logano and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in a green-white-checkered finish. Junior dominated the second half of the race and wasn’t seriously challenged by the other contenders over the final two laps.

Earnhardt Jr., who hasn’t won a Sprint Cup race since June 2008, was exuberant in victory lane.

“I feel lucky,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “I was so worried I wasn’t going to win. I worked hard to try to win, not only for Daddy. I’m proud for him going to the Hall of Fame. He would be proud of this, for sure.”

Despite wild fan celebration during the race and after the win Friday night, Junior said he wouldn’t drive the No. 3 again. “This is it,” he said. “No more 3 for me.”

The Wrangler No. 3 project brought together the sometimes feuding members of the Earnhardt family and team owner Richard Childress, Earnhardt Sr.’s partner in years of success. The car was designed and entered in the race in part to celebrate Earnhardt Sr.’s induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame this year.

Earnhardt Sr. was killed on the last lap of the Daytona 500 in 2001.

“I hope the fans got a lot out of this because it was trying emotionally to put it together,” Earnhardt Jr. said.

It was also emotional on pit row Friday night.

Childress hugged Earnhardt Jr. after the win. “He just said that Daddy would be happy, real happy,” Junior said. “I never knew where I stood with Daddy sometimes. He was a loose cannon.”

Tony Eury Jr., who crew-chiefed the car, was in tears after the finish.

“You know we lost everything here,” he said. “To come back with that number and do this, it means everything.”

Earnhardt Jr. outran Logano by .094 of a second for the win.

Stenhouse Jr. was a close third, followed by point leader Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick.

The race marked the debut of the Nationwide Series “new” car as Dodge Challengers and Ford Mustangs competed.
