Former Nationwide Series champion Clint Bowyer won the pole Friday afternoon for Friday night’s Dollar General 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Bowyer turned a fast lap of 182.174 miles per hour to edge fellow Sprint Cup regular Ryan Newman for the No. 1 starting spot.

The 200-lap race is scheduled at 8 o’clock tonight.

Bowyer edged Newman, who ran 181.733. Bowyer was the only driver over the 182 mark.

Completing the top five were series point leader Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Martin Truex Jr.

Kyle Busch, the leader in series wins this year with 12, qualified 10th.

Danica Patrick qualified 18th.
