Carl Edwards stopped the Kyle Busch Express by winning Saturday's O'Reily Auto Parts 300 at Texas Motor Speedway as Brad Keselowski finished third and clinched the Nationwide Series championship.

Keselowski piled up enough points to wrap up the series title with races remaining at Phoenix and Homestead, FL. The day was particularly special for long-time motorsports magnate Roger Penske, Keselowski’s car owner. The championship is Penske’s first in NASCAR despite a career dominating the front rows of Indy-car racing.

The finish was set up by a late-race incident involving Parker Kligerman and Robert Richardson Jr. Edwards had a two-second lead as the caution flag flew, and the leaders pitted for fresh tires for the race’s final 10 laps.

Edwards shot past Busch as the cars came up to speed on the restart and stayed in front the rest of the way despite some added tension at the finish.

The race ended with a green-white-checkered as Brian Scott slammed the wall off turn two and sprayed pieces onto the track, a few seconds before Clint Bowyer’s car spewed smoke and brought out the final caution.

Busch, in second, and Keselowski, in third, had a final chance to catch Edwards, but the Ford driver cruised through the final two laps to win easily.

In an unusual move, Edwards ran through the gate at the start-finish line and into the grandstand, where he was hugged and congratulated by numerous fans. Then he stopped alongside Keselowski’s car on the frontstretch and congratulated the new champion.

“I saw the gate open there and just wanted to go up there and be with the people,” Edwards said. “Our car ran perfectly today.”

“I had to do everything I could,” he said. “Kyle and those guys have a spectacular car. I just got the best restart I could. It ended up winning the race.”

Following Busch and Keselowski in the finish order were Joey Logano and Martin Truex Jr.

The 300-mile race had only five cautions and no serious incidents.

Busch, trying to win his sixth straight Nationwide race at TMS, had the dominant car in the first half of the event, but Edwards came on strong in the closing miles, passing Busch with relative ease and holding off all challengers as the race reached its final laps.
