Kyle Busch punctuated a record season with a victory in Saturday’s season-ending Ford 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, as he held off Carl Edwards to score his ninth victory of the season and 20th in NASCAR’s top three divisions.

Edwards gave Busch a battle at the end, but Busch was able to put his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota into victory lane, ahead of the Roush Fenway Racing Ford of Edwards. Jeff Burton was third in a Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet.

Busch officially became the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion when the green flag flew to start Saturday’s race. Busch has had a remarkable season, finishing first or second in 20 of 35 races and setting NASCAR records for most points and most laps led in the series.

“Well, it’s always something to get your name in the record books,” Busch said. “I always go out and try to do the best I can.”

Edwards started from the pole. Brad Keselowski brought out the first caution on Lap 9, when his JR Motorsports Chevrolet spun in Turn 4. It would not be the last time he went around.

Edwards and Busch lined up 1-2 on the Lap 12 restart, but Busch quickly went to the lead.

And then, on Lap 35, Denny Hamlin turned Keselowski at the exit to Turn
4, reigniting the feud between them that boiled over last week in Phoenix. NASCAR black-flagged Hamlin and held him for one lap for aggressive driving.

“Look at this, all the guys down pit road laughing at me,” Hamlin said as he came in to serve his penalty. “Every guy from every crew is laughing. This is hilarious!"

Edwards pitted under caution to have his front valance repaired.

When the race restarted, Jeff Burton began challenging Busch for the lead, moving out front on Lap 43.

At the Lap 50 mark, one-quarter distance, Burton led Busch by 0.726 seconds. Ryan Newman was third, followed by Joey Logano and Scott Speed. By Lap 75, Burton stretched his lead to 3.57 seconds over Busch.

Busch retook the lead eight laps later on pit road, during a caution period for debris.

On the Lap 84 restart, Busch held the lead, as Logano moved to second ahead of Burton. Three laps later, Logano was out front for the first time, relegating his teammate Busch to second place.

A Lap-92 caution gave Hamlin the Lucky Dog free pass, putting him back on the lead lap.

At the halfway point, there was a tremendous four-way battle up front, with Busch moving to the lead over Edwards, Burton, Newman and a suddenly fading Logano.
