NEWMAN: One Last Shot At Victory
Written by: Ryan Newman

It’s hard to believe that the final race of the season is this weekend. I’ve heard so many people echo that sentiment this week, but it really is true. It seems like this year has just flown by.

I’m so proud of what the No. 39 U.S. Army/Haas Automation team has accomplished in our first year together. Like I have said from the beginning of the season, when I made the move to Stewart-Haas Racing, I didn’t have any expectations and I really didn’t know what to expect.

My main goal, which I told Tony Stewart the day that I signed the papers, was to have fun racing again. And I really have had a good time.

Working with Tony Gibson as my crew chief, Stewart and his crew chief Darian Grubb and team manager Bobby Hutchens has been a lot of fun and an incredible experience for all of us. We all came from different teams and we worked together to bring the best of what we had learned over the years to SHR.

Our first year has, without a doubt, been a success in my opinion. I think we definitely proved what we are capable of doing on the racetrack.

Stewart has won several races. The No. 39 team has won a couple of poles, and I feel we probably let a few races get away during the season. And of course, I know we shocked a lot of people when we put both of our teams in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship in our first season.

I think there is a great sense of pride in everything we have done and accomplished as a team. But there is still something missing, and that is our first win for the No. 39 team. That was one of our goals, and we’re going to do everything we can this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway to accomplish that.

If we don’t win a race this year, will I consider this year a failure? Absolutely not. How could I?

I think it will just give us more to shoot for as we prepare for the 2010 season. So, going into Homestead, we know we still have something we want to prove. We want a win. We want to set the tone for next season with our final race.

In his first seven seasons, Newman has collected 43 poles and 13 wins in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, including the 2008 Daytona 500 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.
