A fourth American rider will compete in the MotoGP class at the Red Bull Indianapolis GP on Aug. 17-19 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as veteran Steve Rapp will race on a wild-card entry fielded by Attack Performance.
Rapp, 40, from Hawthorne, Calif., will ride a Claiming Rule Teams (CRT) motorcycle. The 1000cc machine will feature an aluminum-framed chassis built by Attack Performance in its shop in Huntington Beach, Calif., powered by a heavily modified Kawasaki ZX-10R engine.
“I’ve wanted to design my own chassis for 10 years,” team owner Richard Stanboli said. “So this new class structure, essentially a Superbike engine housed in a prototype chassis, has provided an ideal opportunity for me.”
The new CRT rules allow teams to either build or buy prototype chassis and use production-based engines in MotoGP, saving costs. CRT machines compete alongside factory prototypes in the same race.
2007 Daytona 200 winner Rapp will join fellow American riders Nicky Hayden, Ben Spies and Colin Edwards – all full-time MotoGP competitors – in the Red Bull Indianapolis GP.
This will be the second time Rapp has raced at IMS. He competed in the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series races last August during the Red Bull Indianapolis GP, finishing second in both races.
Rapp also will ride an Attack CRT bike in the MotoGP class at the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix on July 27-29 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
