• Pol Espargaro starts from pole for the seventh time this year; however the only time he has won from pole in 2012 is at Silverstone.

• Scott Redding is in second place on the grid, equalling his best ever qualifying result in Grand Prix racing. Redding could clinch fifth place in the championship, which would be the highest championship position by a British rider in the intermediate-class of Grand Prix racing since Tom Herron in 1977.

• In third place on the grid is Marc Marquez, who just needs to finish 14th or higher to ensure that he wins the world championship title, irrespective of where closest challenger Espargaro finishes.

• Thomas Luthi heads the second row of the grid. Luthi will be looking to get back on the podium for the first time since the Czech GP at Brno.

• Takaaki Nakagami is in fifth place on the grid and will be aiming to become the first Japanese rider to finish on the podium in any of the three MotoGP classes since Takahashi was 2nd in France last year.

• Anthony West has qualified in ninth place on the grid for his home Grand Prix, which is his best qualifying performance since he was seventh fastest in the wet qualifying session at the Sachsenring.
