• Casey Stoner starts from pole for the fifth time in 2012 and for the first time since the German Grand Prix. This is the fifth successive year that Stoner has started from pole at Phillip Island and he will be aiming for his sixth successive race win at his home circuit.

• Jorge Lorenzo starts on the front row for the ninth successive race. If he scores at least three points more than Pedrosa in the race then he will become the first Spanish rider to win the premier-class world title for a second time.

• If Lorenzo finishes in the top three in the race it will be his 16th podium of the year, which would equal his own record from 2010 for most MotoGP podium finishes in a season; he currently shares that 16-podium record with Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner.

• Dani Pedrosa is on the front row for the 11th successive race. Pedrosa has won the last three races and he is aiming to be the first Honda rider to take four or more successive MotoGP wins since Valentino Rossi in 2002.

• Heading the second row of the grid is Cal Crutchlow, the tenth time this year he has qualified in the top four. Crutchlow is the first British rider to finish in the top ten in the final championship standing in the premier-class of Grand Prix racing since Niall Mackenzie in 1994.

• Stefan Bradl has qualified in the middle of the second row on his first appearance at the Phillip Island circuit in the MotoGP class.

• Andrea Dovizioso, who has qualified in sixth place on the grid, has already had 13 top-five finishes this 2012.

• Alvaro Bautista heads the third row of the grid. Bautista has finished in the top six at the last six races.

• The highest placed Ducati rider in qualifying is Valentino Rossi, in eighth place on the grid. Rossi shares the record with Casey Stoner of most MotoGP wins at the Phillip Island circuit, both having won on five occasions.

• The top CRT rider in qualifying, for the ninth time this year is Randy de Puniet. He is in ninth place on the grid, which is the best qualifying result so far by a CRT rider.
