Love your comments! NASCAR has a BIG problem with no passing, boring races until the end. Drivers are paid big money to drive so more prize money is not going to solve the problem. POINTS WILL!!!!!!!!! Look at the way the points penalty for touching the new car gets their attention!
Here's one old fan’s simple suggestion:
1. One point for every lap led under green.
2. Two bonus points for a green flag pass for the lead scored at the start/finish line.
3. NO MORE five points for leading a lap, especially under yellow.
4. Five bonus points for the driver that makes the most progress in his position from the start to the finial position and finishes the race.
5. Do away with the top 35 rule and let the fastest 43 race, period!!!
6. Do away with the double-file restarts with the slower cars on the inside.
7. Give the crew chiefs a little more flexibility in the suspension of the car. —Tim Duke, San Antonio, Texas
Wow, Tim, you have some great suggestions! Thanks for sharing your ideas. Here’s why NASCAR will never adopt your first two points: because if they did, the announcers wouldn’t be able to say, “And if the race ended now, here are your points!”
Unbelievable a few races without a sponsor and “POOF” the No. 40 team disappears. Makes me wonder how such a rich team could simply shut down like that, surely they could have ridden it out a little longer. I mean the Yates two-car team hasn't had a sponsor for either car all season and they're going to run the whole season and from what I’m told Ganassi has much deeper pockets than Robert Yates. I do realize however that not having your team in the top 35 is a big disadvantage and the way Franchitti was going it seems unlikely he would have cracked the top 35. Such a shame though, because the 40 car has a good history in the Cup series. — James Lennox.
Thanks for the comments, James. The thing is, teams are only “rich” if they have sponsorship, and the No. 40 didn’t, period. Chip Ganassi’s partner Felix Sabates told XM Radio’s Claire B. Lang that the team had already lost $10 or $11 million on Franchitti’s car and they just weren’t going to underwrite it anymore, especially when the results weren’t there. And for whatever reason, the team performed badly all year. As for Yates, they have much smaller overheard than Ganassi does, many fewer employees and have had some paying sponsors. Freecreditreport.com has sponsored David Gilliland’s car for most of the season, while Travis Kvapil’s car has had a host of paying sponsors for one- and two-race deals.
