With all of the reports that Bobby Labonte has re-signed with Petty, and then the reports he left for RCR at the beginning of April, I really don't know what to think. I don't know if you are aware, that Bobby's marketing agency, Breaking Limits, has General Mills as its top client. Don't think it wouldn't make sense for Bobby to sign his sponsor to a car he wasn't driving for. It just doesn't add up. Looking forward to your response. Also, if Bobby was close to signing to Petty, why wouldn't he say something about it, or even Richard or Kyle? — Drew
Drew: Excellent question, as I’ve been hearing conflicting reports. The latest is that he’s still uncertain of where he wants to go, but has a couple of options, including staying with the Pettys. As far as having his own agency, remember that the late Dale Earnhardt owned one race team and drove for another, so it’s not impossible to be a driver to be involved with multiple teams on different levels.
Could you tell us what's going on with Erin Crocker this season? It seems she has dropped off the face of racing after her start earlier in the Fonegear truck and searches do not seem to have anything to offer in regard to where she and her race career stands at this point. Has she been overlooked or has her season stumbled? — Skip Baker, Portland Me.
Thanks for the question, Skip. While Erin Crocker has a couple of one-off rides in the NCTS and ARCA/RE-MAX Series in the works, she has no full-time ride and is looking for one.
I grew up in Miami. I went to a race track just outside Miami and there was a driver there named Buddy Baker. I wonder if it’s the same Buddy Baker from NASCAR? It would have been the late 1950s into the 60s. Thank you for the help. — Kathy
Kathy: Buddy Baker’s first NASCAR race was in 1959, so it’s possible he was who you saw. But you’ve given me nowhere near enough information to know for sure. It’s like me
While checking the results from the Richmond race I see Sterling Marlin's points has a PE and I couldn't find an explanation. Can you help me out with this? — Doug
Doug: Good question. Marlin didn’t get points because either he was added as the driver after the team had filed its entry blank or the team entered the race after the deadline for submitting its entry blank.
Where will Mayfield end up? — Ken Mayfield
Ken: I’m assuming you mean Jeremy Mayfield. I’ve not heard his name linked to any open rides. I suspect he’ll not be back in the Sprint Cup Series permanently anytime in the near future.
Wasn't Dale Earnhardt Jr. penalized a few years ago for intentionally bringing out a caution? What was his penalty and I hope that Denny Hamlin get penalized as well. — Bill Foust
Bill: You have an excellent memory. Earnhardt was docked 25 points for intentionally causing a caution at Bristol and then bragging about it on his radio. NASCAR will not penalize Denny Hamlin because they couldn’t prove intent.
I am a lifelong fan of NASCAR and am so disappointed with how Kyle Busch handled the post race interview after the Nationwide Race at RIR. I believe he said something along the lines of “I will hurt him.” Does NASCAR think that is OK? We all learned from the greatest the rubbing is racing and of course we have seen the helmet throwing and the name-calling and usually by Monday morning we are laughing about it. But after all that NASCAR has done to make a safer car and a safer track after losing the legend Dale Earnhardt and here Kyle Busch is threatening Steve Wallace. “I will wreck cars to win, I will hurt him.” I hope that he woke up Saturday morning and felt ashamed of the things that he said and the image that he has portrayed to young race fans. — Miranda Byerly
Thanks for the e-mail, Miranda. I’m quite certain Kyle Busch wouldn’t deliberately injure another driver. Emotions run high at short tracks and I’ve seen many, many drivers mad after short-track races. I wouldn’t take his comments too seriously. And I doubt very much that he felt ashamed on Saturday morning.
