ANOTHER STRONG RUN FOR EARNHARDT Dale Earnhardt Jr. hasn’t found victory lane since Richmond in May 2005, but he continues to run impressively in his first season with Hendrick Motorsports. Saturday night, Earnhardt earned his series-high sixth top-10 finish in eight NASCAR Sprint Cup starts so far in 2008, as he finished seventh in the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.
Earnhardt led 87 laps but had to pit for fuel late in the race, which cost him valuable track position. Still, he professed to be happy with the results. “I am not frustrated. Had a good finish, proud of my team, had a great car,” Earnhardt said. “I don't know what our expectations truly were going in to the race. But I don't think they were that good. I don't know if we could have made it. I don't know when we stopped, or how much (fuel) I was burning a lap. I can't do the math. I just do what I’m told. We did the right thing. We can't run out and finish out of the top 10.”
What Earnhardt was after the race was bone tired, drained by the hot, dry air in the Sonoran Desert. “Great adjustments, we got another solid finish and Hendrick comes home with a win, so pretty happy. Just ready to recharge our batteries. Got a lot of racing to go.”
RCR SHARP AGAIN Richard Childress Racing once again showed why it will be a team to reckon with in the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup title hunt, as Clint Bowyer finished second and Jeff Burton recovered from qualifying 39th and spinning out early on finish sixth and maintain the Sprint Cup points lead. The only disappointment for the team is that Kevin Harvick ran out of gas as he was pitting late in the race, dropping him from a certain top-five finish to 19th.
“We had a great car and we kept getting it better throughout the race. Todd (Berrier, crew chief) and the guys did a great job in the pits,” Harvick said. “We just got caught on pit road when we ran out of gas there near the end, lost some time having to refire the car. We should have finished at least in the top five.”
Despite earning his sixth top-10 of the season, Sprint Cup points leader Burton wasn’t much happier afterwards than Harvick. “It was a good finish for us, but we are missing something at this track, I am missing something at this track,” he said. “It has been a thorn in our side. … We will certainly take it. I am disappointed in how we ran, I am disappointed in myself. We are just missing something.”

NASCAR HONORS FALLEN OFFICIAL A number of NASCAR officials were wearing black armbands on Saturday, in a show of mourning for Sprint Cup engine inspector Brienne Davis, who died Tuesday afternoon when she lost control of her pickup truck and crashed near Huntersville, N.C. A memorial service for Davis will take place Tuesday night from 5:30-7 p.m. at Raymer Funeral Home in Huntersville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Victory Junction, 4500 Adam's Way, Randleman, NC 27317.
CLOSE TO HOME While NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France has made at least two trips to China in the last couple of years, don’t expect the sanctioning body to race there anytime soon. NASCAR has put feelers out in Europe and Asia about possible expansion, but those notions have been put on the backburner, sources tell SPEEDTV.com. The reason is simple enough: There’s plenty of work to do here and room for growth in the sport without leaving the United States and North America.
TO THE BACK J.J. Yeley’s 22nd-place qualifying effort, his best of the season so far, ultimately proved to be wasted, as the Hall of Fame Racing No. 96 Toyota will have to go to the back of the field for an engine change prior to the start of today’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway.

I FOUGHT THE CAR AND THE CAR WON Saturday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway will be the third event here with NASCAR’s new-generation race car. But drivers think it still has a ways to go. “There's been an improvement,” said Kyle Busch, a past Phoenix winner. “It's been being able to get it going through the corner a little bit better and stuff like that. We still seem to fight it on the long runs and trying to make the thing turn. It will be pretty good for the first eight to 10 laps then you start getting tight as you would. Behind guys when you get into the corner it really wants to slide around and doesn't feel like there's
FORD STEPS UP Ford Motor Co.’s new “Drive one” marketing campaign is sponsoring the Yates Racing No. 28 Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this weekend. Ford describes “Drive one” as a “new and far-reaching message on improved vehicle quality, fuel economy, safety advances and smart technology.”
“Yates Racing is honored to have the opportunity to run the ‘Drive one’ paint scheme on the No. 28 Ford Fusion this weekend,” said team owner Doug Yates, who is still looking for permanent sponsorship for both the No. 28 and the No. 38 driven by David Gilliland. “We have a great driver in Travis, along with top-of-the-line equipment and technology courtesy of Ford.”

Gilliland is currently 22nd in NASCAR Sprint Cup points and Kvapil 24th, remarkable performances for a team that basically has had very little funding this year and went through a physical move and a profound employee reorganization last year.

NEW PRIORITIES Ray Evernham, who last year sold the majority interest in the NASCAR Sprint Cup team he founded in 2000, was back in the garage this week after skipping the last three races. Even though he no longer has day-to-day responsibility for Gillett Evernham Motorsports, the former modified racer has plenty to keep him busy these days. He’s just opened a 42,000-square-foot shop in Mooresville, N.C., in the same industrial park as Petty Enterprises. Evernham plans a small museum in the facility, and he’s toying around with his hot rod collection, as well as some late model cars and dirt and pavement open-wheelers. Evernham, who was crew chief for three of Jeff Gordon’s four Cup championships, will also participate in Tony Stewart’s Prelude to the Dream race at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, on June 4.
FOR A GOOD CAUSE The Transport Drivers of Motorsports Association plans on raising money in honor of NASCAR engine inspector Brienne Davis, who was killed in a traffic accident near Huntersville, N.C. on Tuesday. The funds will go to her alma mater in Jonesville, La. The organization wants to raise enough money to donate at least five computers and plant a tree in her name at the school. For information on how to donate, contact TDMA President Robby Maschhaupt at 704-746-7945.
