The NASCAR Answerman on SPEEDtv.com - The Online Motorsports Authority
Note: By popular demand, The Answer Man returns in 2009 on SPEEDtv.com. I will be answering questions every week. I look forward to hearing from you as the season goes on. And by the way, thanks for the e-mails of support. – Tom Jensen
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the first SPEEDtv.com Answerman column of 2009. On Monday, I wrote a column about the alternatives NASCAR faces in these uncertain economic times. Many of you were kind enough to send thoughtful, well-reasoned responses to the column.
Rather than simply doing a Q&A for the first Answerman column of the year, I thought I’d include a selection of reader comments and feedback. There isn’t the space to include every suggestion, of course, but following are some of your thoughts about the current state of NASCAR.
And remember, if you have any NASCAR-related questions, please send them to: .
Happy New Year, one and all!
I agree NASCAR has to change somehow. We used to go regularly to races, but have grown tired of the overcrowded stands (too many “normal” sized people in a row for number of seats — literally squeezed in). Not to mention the cost. We can attend an IRL event and get WEEKEND tickets AND garage passes where you can get within 2 feet of the cars and actually watch them work on them (mechanic husband loves this!) All this for UNDER the price of one Sunday NASCAR ticket. Granted, the stands are not full … but for us this just makes it an even better experience. … Back to NASCAR … I wish them luck this year getting people to spend their money to actually go to the races to see the same teams win over and over. They’ve created an empire that is now out of control. … Add up the tickets, gas, food, and hotel … people can’t justify it anymore, especially if you are talking about a family that has kids to take along. — Judi Myers.
Judi: I couldn’t agree more about your points on the cost of attending races. While NASCAR doesn’t set ticket prices or concession costs, clearly more needs to be done to make racing affordable for families, who are the core NASCAR customer. I’m hoping we’ll see some innovative track operators offer some real value to families in 2009.
