FORCE OF NATURE John Force, the NHRA record holder for series championships and event victories, was in the house Sunday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway to promote the September opening of zMAX Dragway @ Concord, the dragstrip that is part of the LMS complex. zMAX Dragway's west grandstand, which sits to the left of the driver at the starting line, will be named John Force Grandstand in honor of the 14-time NHRA Funny Car champion.

“They call John ‘Elvis on Asphalt,’ for a reason,” said O. Bruton Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of Speedway Motorsports, Inc.
“Not only is he the greatest drag racer that's ever strapped in to a Funny Car, he's also the most entertaining, and he's a great ambassador for the straight-line sport. It only seemed natural that our first grandstand at zMAX Dragway be named for drag racing's most legendary figure.”

“I take it as a real honor that Bruton Smith would recognize me in that way at one of their great facilities,” Force said. “When I go to stadiums around the country, I see grandstands with the names of Darrell Waltrip, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt. Those were my heroes in NASCAR, and the fact that in drag racing, I would be honored in the same way means a lot to me, especially at this point in my career.”

TALL ORDER Yao Ming, the seven-foot, six-inch basketball star Yao Ming and
two-time U.S. Olympic taekwondo gold medalist Steven Lopez visited Lowe’s Motor Speedway Sunday as honorary pit crew members for Kyle Petty’s No. 45 Coca-Cola team.

The two sports stars were trackside to hawk the launch of Coca-Cola’s new summer program celebrating the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, 'Connect With the World Over a Coke.' Yao is also heavily involved in relief efforts in his native China, where an earthquake in the Sichuan Province on May 12, killed more than 60,000 people and left more than 25,000 more missing.

TOYOTA TUNES IT DOWN After Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart all suffered engine failures during the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV weekend, the team has returned with a considerably more conservative engine package for this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

“That deal last week was just, we knew we were going for it,” said Busch’s crew chief, Steve Addington. “Mark (Cronquist, JGR’s head engine builder) came to us and gave us a chance to do one or the other (engine packages) and we said, ‘We’ve got to run it at some point and see where we stand with it.’ So we went for it. We ran through practice and everything was fine. We looked at it and inspected it and everything looked good. It was just one of those things. We all went for it and that’s what happened. It didn’t cost us any points. When you run that good and he’s that happy with the car, you feel like it cost you a million bucks. But hindsight is always 20-20.”
