SUNNY SKIES The weather is perfect at Richmond International Raceway here on Sunday, as Tropical Storm Hanna has blown through, leaving only sunshine in her wake. That’s good news for race fans, as the Chevy Rock ‘N’ Roll 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race will go on as scheduled at 1 p.m., with the Emerson Radio 250 Nationwide event slated to go off at 7 p.m.

SURPRISE GUEST Juan Pablo Montoya made an unannounced visit to a group of campers at Richmond International Raceway Sunday morning for a brief meet-and-greet with race fans. Montoya answered questions and signed autographs for about 15 minutes to a shocked group of some 20 or so campers.

The Colombian driver,
who has suffered through a disappointing second season with Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, said his team already has its eyes firmly on 2009, as he will not qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup. “We know we’re behind,” said Montoya, who has a best finish this season of second at Talladega. “We knew 10 races ago, we weren’t going to make the Chase. And we know why, so we’re putting everything in place (for 2009). Are we going to make the Chase next year? I would love to. It really depends on how much we develop over the winter.”

According to Montoya, the team knows it needs to get better at the high-speed intermediate tracks that comprise about half of the Sprint Cup schedule. “I think our program at the short tracks has gotten a lot better. I think we still need to improve at the big tracks,” said Montoya. The other thing the team needs? “There’s always a little bit of horsepower.”
