INDYCAR: Miller’s Mailbag, 2.8
Always genuine, never lite: It's Miller time. Here's the latest Q&A from SPEED.com's IndyCar guru.

Q: What is the drama around Dragon and Legge? She always seems to have bad luck with team owners. Any chance she can take the TrueCar money elsewhere, like a Rahal Letterman? Or team up with Davey Hamilton and his HP money to find calmer pastures?

Jeremy from Harrisburg

RM: Can’t say but I do know Katherine was furious when she learned that Jay might be shopping her to a satellite team.

Q: Why aren't the cars even faster compared to the last one? On a road / street course, my understanding is there is at least 50 more horsepower, no more weight, carbon brakes, and more downforce. I was at St. Pete where yes, the DW12 was quicker than the previous car, but only by about 1 second. At Mid-Ohio, where I also attended, the DW12 was about 2 secondsquicker. Seems like it should be more than that given the increase in power, grip, and better brakes. Second, if / when aero kits finally do come about, any chance the series will go with a smaller rear wing? If the cars aren't going to get more power (via more boost, more revs, or whatever), why not take some down force off on the road / street courses to at least give the impression of more power? So many cars within 1 second of each other does make for good racing, but I think it could be better if it was more challenging to the drivers.

Scott Tepas

RM: I believe the cars are almost as heavy as the old ones and don’t have any more power but they are more efficient – hence the quicker times. As Marshall wrote this week, Will Phillips has some ideas about the aero kits but I liked his approach to Texas last year so he understands all about restoring the driver more to the equation.

Q: I would love to see Panther Racing co-owner Jim Harbaugh and his brother John do a Smothers Brothers routine. Hope they can both bring more attention to the Sonoma and Baltimore races. BTW, I remember Dicky Smothers racing at Laguna Seca when I was a teenager. I believe he raced in Camel GT. Did you ever have contact with Dicky and do you see him at Sonoma? He still lives in the wine country, I believe.

Paul, Carmel, CA

RM: The NFL season is already ramping up when those two races run so I doubt the Harbaughs can help promote them. I met Smothers at IRP when he was running a Formula 500 car in the late ‘60s and he did a decent job.

Q: Are you familiar with and/or are a fan the TV show, Top Gear? The US version is playing on the History Channel and the original UK version on BBC America. Would you be interested in being a guest in the US show, which means taking a Suzuki SX4 around a track and compare times with other celebrities?

Daniel, Silicon Valley

RM: I’ve watched both versions a couple of times and I’d be interested if I could run a midget at Kokomo Speedway.

Q: Saw that Rufus' autobiography has been released. Now, Mr. Gurney needs to write his. In the Mailbag a while ago you mentioned the possibility. Is there any news on that front?

Mike Walsh

RM: Evi Gurney says they are working feverously to get it finished and it might have to come out in a couple of parts but that’s fine. I need Xmas presents for next year and Gurney’s story is as good as it gets.

Q: Can you please give me an explanation of the CART pop-off controversy in 2001? And what are the differences between this controversy and the Turbogate in 2012? What Happened with Andy Kenopensky the guy whose conflicts with CART in 1989 give the ideas for Tony George to form the IRL? And why in 1992 was Team Penske the only team who used the Ilmor-Chevrolet 265B?

Ismael Orellán

RM: It was poor management in which Toyota supposedly got an advantage over Honda, which boycotted the opening practice session at Detroit. It was also the beginning of the end of CART. Doesn’t compare to TurboGate because the same company makes all the turbos and the rules weren’t broken, it just wasn’t handled very well. Andy died many years ago. Because RP owned part of Ilmor and controlled Chevy.
