GURSS: Pack It Up

It’s a big week for the NASCAR traveling circus. Nearly all of us involved in the sport are packing for the two-week stay in (hopefully) sunny and warm Daytona Beach. Unlike the usual three- or four-day race weekend, Daytona Speedweeks are a season unto themselves, which only adds to the stress of it also being the first race of the year.

More than the racecars and trucks need to be packed-up for the south-bound trek. For a public relations representative like myself, it’s printing and stuffing new media kits to be handed out like candy to the throngs of media who attend the event. It’s planning for success by preparing the “win bag” of sponsor hats for Victory Lane, plus preparing and memorizing the emergency plan for nearly any circumstance. Sadly, the emergency plan is a necessary part of the sport, and it’s something I hope to never use again. Then, there are credentials and parking passes to worry about and making sure executives from every major sponsor are taken care of as well.

The damp, cold nights and mornings require adequate layers of clothing, so packing the suitcase becomes a Rubik’s cube of organization. Do not forget the frequent Florida rain squalls that seem to pop up in the late afternoon hours – so bring your rain gear (and extra socks) as well.

The primary sponsor I am representing was unveiled less than two weeks ago, so any sponsor apparel that is so critical (especially on raceday) will have to be shipped to the track directly before the green flag falls. (And how will I get all of that extra gear onto the plane in the same bag that’s already stuffed beyond recognition?!)
