Listening to your favorites on the scanner offers the most primal and direct connection to that driver and team in the heat of battle. Some (well… most) pout or curse like inebriated sailors when things are not as they like, which is problematic for those with kids, but it also gives the listener a real sense of the driver’s personality when the pressure is at its highest. It is much more revealing of a driver’s personality than 100 television or newspaper interviews where anyone can put on their best “public” face.

In an era of mostly bland young drivers, don’t we yearn to know the real personalities of the combatants? Don’t we want our favorite athletes to be real? In my mind, the most real access to the drivers is through the radio chatter. We want verve and personality from our heroes, and that is often best exhibited – in colorful and sometimes controversial ways – on the radio.
