Jimmie Johnson says it's an "exciting time" having the opportunity to add Dale Earnhardt Jr. to the already high-profile Hendrick Motorsports lineup.

Johnson added that he knew there had been mutual interest between the driver and the team owner.

"I've known that we were pursuing [him] and felt like we were in a good position to acquire Junior," he said. "There was a lot that needed to happen and a lot that needed to take place, and that stuff has all been going on
behind closed doors. But I was at least aware of the situation. I'm excited to have him.

"I think he's going to be a great teammate and a great asset."
