Kevin Harvick continued to show that he will be a force when the NASCAR Chase For The Sprint Cup gets under way later this year, and Roush Fenway Racing drivers got a boost with three teams finishing in the top five Sunday at Michigan International Speedway.

But the news wasn’t so good for everyone. Mark Martin, trying to keep his Chase hopes alive, struggled and Hendrick Motorsports teams overall appeared to run like anything but championship contenders. Penske Racing teammates had their hands full as well, finishing 32nd or worse, as the series completed its 23rd race of the season.

WINNERS
Kevin Harvick – The only knock on the Richard Childress Racing team was that its two wins this year came at restrictor-plate tracks. Harvick took care of that, and more, with an impressive win at MIS, earning an important 10 bonus points in the process.

Roush Fenway Racing – Always a threat when the series arrives at Michigan, the organization didn’t disappoint this time around either. Carl Edwards (third) collected his sixth consecutive top-10, Greg Biffle led three times for a race-high 66 laps en route to a fourth-place finish and Matt Kenseth’s fifth-place run was his first top-five since Dover. David Ragan used pit strategy to take the lead late, led two laps and came home 11th in one of his best finishes of the year as well.

Tony Stewart – Still seeking his first win of the year, but the veteran owner/driver led three times for 36 laps and seemed to be always in the mix. Jumped four spots, to fourth, in the point standings.

Clint Bowyer – It wasn’t spectacular, but Bowyer’s steady effort, and 13th-place finish, was enough to move him back into the top 12 in the standings. He leads Mark Martin by 35 points.

Martin Truex Jr. – Got track position late in the race by staying out under caution, then managed to stay close to the front down the stretch. The eighth-place finish was his second top-10 in his last three starts.

Denny Hamlin – Smart pit strategy allowed Hamlin to get up front late in the race. While he admitted he had nothing for Harvick, the Joe Gibbs Racing team looked a lot more like a team that has won five times this season. Runnerup finish shot him up three spots, to third, in the standings.
